Departments: Banking and Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Computer Science (Information Systems option)

ABOUT THIS GUIDE

This is a detailed research guide and framework, not a finished project for submission. It gives you a ready-to-adapt Chapter One, a map for your literature review, a full survey methodology plan with a worked sample-size calculation, a draft questionnaire, empty results tables, and guidance for writing your conclusions. You collect your own data and write Chapters Four and Five from your own findings.

SECTION 2: MODEL CHAPTER ONE

1.1 Background to the Study (model text, rewrite in your own words)

Financial inclusion means that individuals and businesses have access to useful and affordable financial products and services, such as payments, savings, credit and insurance, delivered in a responsible and sustainable way. People without access to formal financial services must rely on cash and informal arrangements, which can be unsafe, expensive and limited. Financial inclusion is therefore linked to poverty reduction, business growth and economic development.

Nigeria has made progress, but a large share of adults has remained outside the formal financial system, particularly in rural areas, in the northern regions, and among women and young people [quote the latest figures from the EFInA Access to Financial Services survey]. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) launched the National Financial Inclusion Strategy in 2012, with targets for reducing exclusion, and later revised it. Policies such as tiered know-your-customer requirements, agent banking guidelines, payment service bank licences and the Bank Verification Number (BVN) were introduced partly to support inclusion.

Financial technology (fintech) companies use digital platforms, mobile phones and agent networks to deliver financial services at lower cost than traditional bank branches. In Nigeria, fintech firms provide mobile wallets, instant transfers, point-of-sale (POS) agent services, digital savings, small loans and bill payments. Studies elsewhere, such as Jack and Suri (2014) on mobile money in Kenya, found that digital financial services helped households manage risks. Ozili (2018) discussed how digital finance can support financial inclusion, while also raising concerns about cost, fraud and digital exclusion. This study therefore examines the role of fintech services in financial inclusion in [study area].

1.2 Statement of the Problem (model)

Although fintech services have spread rapidly in Nigeria, many adults in [study area] still rely on cash and informal savings, and some users face problems such as failed transactions, fraud, high charges and poor network coverage [support this with evidence]. It is not clear how much fintech services have increased access to, and use of, financial services in the area, or which factors influence their adoption. This study addresses that problem.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective is to examine the role of fintech services in financial inclusion in [study area]. The specific objectives are to:
1. identify the fintech services used by adults in the area;
2. examine the effect of fintech use on access to financial services;
3. examine the effect of fintech use on the usage of financial services (frequency of saving, payments and borrowing);
4. examine the factors influencing the adoption of fintech services;
5. identify the challenges users face.
